Metronidazole is used in the case of variety of infections. It belongs to a class of antibiotics known as nitroimidazoles. Metronidazole is used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, stomach, joints, or respiratory tract. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and protozoa. This antibiotic only treats bacterial and protozoa infections.

Metronidazole comes as a tablet and an extended-release tablet to take by mouth. This remedy is sometimes used with other medicines to treat stomach ulcers. Metronidazole may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. The Metronidazole immediate-release tablet and extended-release tablet are prescription drugs.
