Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxer that blocks pain sensations between the nerves and the brain. Carisoprodol is a member of the skeletal muscle relaxant class of medicines. It is used together with rest and physical therapy to treat skeletal muscle conditions such as pain or injury. It operates on the brain and neurological system to relax the muscles.
Carisoprodol comes in dosages of 350mg and 500mg. The dosage is determined by your medical condition as well as your reaction to therapy. Carisoprodol medication should only be used short-term for 3 weeks or less unless directed by your doctor. If you stop taking this drug abruptly, you may have withdrawal symptoms such as stomach pains, difficulty sleeping, headache, and nausea. To assist avoid withdrawal, your doctor may gradually reduce your dose.
CAUTIONS
Carisoprodol can cause a severe allergic reaction. You should not take carisoprodol if you have porphyria. Don’t take this drug again if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to it or to a drug called meprobamate. Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.
SIDE EFFECTS
Common side effects of Carisoprodol include headache, dizziness, and sleepiness. Serious side effects may include addiction, allergic reactions, and seizures. In people with a sulfa allergy certain formulations may result in problems.
